The Edibles Guide
Dose Tiers
Microdose: 1 to 2.5 mg. Low: 2.5 to 5 mg. Standard: 5 to 10 mg. Experienced: 10 to 25 mg. New York's regulatory cap is 10 mg per piece and 100 mg per multi-serve package. For first-time consumers, microdose or low-dose. For experienced consumers, standard. Experienced-tier doses should only be used by consumers with established tolerance.
Format Choice
Gummies for precision dosing, clear per-piece labeling, consistent absorption, broad flavor selection. Chocolates for slightly faster onset due to fat content, smoother flavor profile.
Nano-emulsion beverages for fastest onset (15 to 30 minutes) and predictable dose. Baked goods for traditional, slower experience with full first-pass metabolism. Hard candies for travel and discretion.
Why Edibles Take So Long
Edibles are metabolized through the liver, which converts THC into 11-hydroxy-THC, a more potent and longer-acting compound. This first-pass metabolism takes 30 to 120 minutes and produces a longer, fuller-body effect than inhalation. Onset depends on whether you've eaten (empty stomach is faster), the format (chocolate faster than gummy), and individual metabolism.
When To Choose Edibles
Longer-duration experience (4 to 8 hours), smoke-free, discreet, predictable dosing. Useful for evenings, travel, sleep, sustained creative work, or any situation where you can't or don't want to re-dose every hour. Avoid edibles for fast-onset needs (use vape or tincture instead) or when you can't commit 4 to 8 hours to the experience.
Picking By Effect
Sleep: 5 mg THC + CBN, 90 minutes before bed. Social: 5 mg standard THC, 60 minutes before arrival. Creative: 2.5 mg sativa-leaning. Recovery: 5 mg + topical. Anxiety: 1:1 THC:CBD at 5 mg each, or pure CBD. Daytime functional: 2.5 mg microdose. Match the cannabinoid blend to the goal.

Edibles Versus Tinctures
Tinctures held sublingually for 60 seconds onset in 15 to 30 minutes and peak around 60 to 90. Faster than edibles, slower than inhalation. Tinctures also offer more precise dosing (down to fractional mg). Choose tinctures for time-flexible use cases; edibles for set-and-forget long sessions.
