How Tinctures Work
Sublingual Versus Ingested Absorption
Held under the tongue for a full minute before swallowing, tinctures absorb through the mucous membranes and bypass first-pass liver metabolism. This produces faster onset and a slightly different effect profile from edibles. If you swallow the tincture immediately, it behaves more like an edible, slower onset, longer duration, full first-pass metabolism. For the sublingual experience, the 60-second hold matters.
Why Choose A Tincture
Faster onset than edibles (15 to 30 minutes versus 60 to 90). More predictable dosing than smoking.
Smoke-free and odorless. Discreet, the dropper bottle fits in a pocket or bag without drawing attention. Useful for daytime microdosing, sleep support, anxiety management, or any consumer who wants precise dose control without the ritual of smoking or the wait of edibles.
Reading A Tincture Label
Tinctures are dosed in milligrams per dropper, with the dropper itself usually graduated for partial doses. A standard 30 ml bottle holds 30 droppers. If the bottle is 300 mg total THC, each full dropper is 10 mg. Start with a quarter or half dropper, hold under the tongue for 60 seconds, and titrate up over several days as you learn your response.
Carrier Oil Versus Alcohol
MCT-based tinctures absorb more efficiently than alcohol-based ones, and they taste neutral. Alcohol-based tinctures absorb fastest but carry a sharp ethanol flavor. Most New York shelf tinctures use MCT or coconut oil as the carrier. If you have sensitivities, check the carrier on the label.
Specific Tincture Use Cases
Sleep: 5 mg THC with 5 to 10 mg CBN, taken 60 to 90 minutes before bed. Daytime microdose: 2 to 2.5 mg THC, taken once or twice during the day. Anxiety: 1:1 THC:CBD at 5 mg each, or pure CBD at higher doses. Post-workout: 5 to 10 mg of full-spectrum THC tincture for body relaxation and recovery.
Storage And Shelf Life
Store tinctures in a cool, dark place. Most tinctures hold their potency for 12 to 18 months unopened, and 6 to 12 months after opening. Refrigeration extends shelf life but isn't necessary for short-term use. Avoid sunlight and heat, both of which degrade cannabinoids over time.
