CBD vs THC
What THC Does
THC, or delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol, is the primary psychoactive compound in cannabis. It binds primarily to CB1 receptors in the brain, producing euphoria, sensory enhancement, body relaxation, and appetite increase. At lower doses (2 to 5 mg edible, one to two inhalations) it produces mild lift and stress relief. At higher doses it can produce anxiety, paranoia, or dissociative effects in sensitive consumers. THC is what gets you high.
What CBD Does
CBD, or cannabidiol, is non-intoxicating. It modulates the endocannabinoid system without directly binding to CB1, which means it produces effects without the high.
Research and consumer reports associate CBD with anxiety reduction, anti-inflammatory effects, sleep support at higher doses, and counter-balancing the anxiety-inducing potential of high-THC products. Pure CBD products are legal nationwide and produce no impairment.
Why The 1:1 Ratio Works
Products with equal THC and CBD often produce a smoother, less anxious high than pure THC. The CBD blunts the racing-mind effect of THC while preserving the body relaxation and mild euphoria. A 1:1 ratio at 5 mg of each cannabinoid is a popular starting point for anxiety-prone consumers, sleep customers who don't want pure sedation, and anyone who finds pure THC overwhelming.
When To Choose Pure CBD
Pure CBD products are useful for daytime anxiety management, exercise recovery, sleep without psychoactive effect, and any setting where impairment isn't an option (driving, work, parenting). CBD topicals deliver localized effect without systemic absorption. CBD tinctures support steady-state effect throughout the day. CBD edibles support sleep and digestion without inducing high.
Other Minor Cannabinoids
CBN supports sleep (degradation product of THC). CBG, often called the 'mother cannabinoid,' is non-intoxicating and supports focus and mood. CBC modulates inflammation. THCV is appetite-suppressing and energizing, opposite of THC in several effect dimensions. Most of these minor cannabinoids show up in small amounts in full-spectrum flower; targeted products isolate them deliberately.
How To Read A Cannabinoid Profile
Every licensed New York cannabis product carries a Certificate of Analysis showing the cannabinoid profile. Total THC and total CBD are the headline numbers. Look at the ratio between them, the presence of minor cannabinoids, and the relative dose. A 100 mg gummy package with a 1:1 ratio gives you 5 mg of each per gummy across 10 pieces, a very different product from a 100 mg pure-THC package at 10 mg per gummy.
