Cannabis & Sleep
How Cannabis Affects Sleep Architecture
THC at moderate doses can reduce sleep onset latency (time to fall asleep) and increase the duration of deep-sleep phases early in the night. CBN, a degradation product of THC, is independently associated with sedation and is included in most sleep-targeted edibles and tinctures. The combination can be more effective than either alone. Heavy nightly THC use, however, can suppress REM sleep, the dreaming phase associated with memory consolidation, which compounds tolerance and produces rebound effects when use stops.
Recommended Sleep Protocols
Light sleep support: 5 mg THC edible with optional CBN, taken 90 minutes before bed. Moderate sleep support: 7.5 to 10 mg THC edible with 5 to 10 mg CBN, taken 90 minutes before bed.
Inhaled option: one to two inhalations from an indica-dominant flower or rosin cart 30 to 45 minutes before lights-out. Tincture option: 5 mg THC + 5 to 10 mg CBN sublingual, taken 30 to 45 minutes before bed.
What To Try Stocked At Green Genius
Camino Sleep Series gummies (5 mg THC + 1 mg CBN per piece). 1906 Midnight chocolates (THC + magnolia bark for sleep). Holiday Off Hours cherry berry gummies (5 mg THC, simpler entry). Hudson Cannabis indoor indica flower for inhalation. Pure CBN tinctures for non-psychoactive sleep support.
Common Sleep Mistakes
Dosing too high produces a 3am wakeup as the peak passes. Dosing too late produces morning fog. Daily heavy use produces REM suppression and tolerance. Mixing cannabis with alcohol produces worse sleep even when the immediate sleepiness feels stronger. Skipping the wind-down routine (dim lights, no screens, cool room) reduces the effectiveness of any cannabis sleep protocol.
When To Take A Break
If cannabis sleep effect is fading, take a 3 to 7 day break. The break resets tolerance and restores effectiveness. Most consumers find that cycling, five nights on, two nights off, or one week on, three days off, keeps the sleep benefit strong over time without escalating doses.
When To Consult A Doctor
Chronic sleep issues that don't respond to cannabis or any over-the-counter aid warrant a sleep specialist consultation. Cannabis can mask underlying issues (sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, chronic pain) rather than treat them. Our budtenders can help you find a useful starting product, but they aren't medical professionals, for persistent sleep problems, talk to a doctor.
